Artificial feeding and hydration should only be used when there is no other option . Sufficient staff should always be available to help those with eating and swallowing difiiculties.
Some doctors have felt uneasy about the extent of use of feeding through tubes, especially in patients with dementia or those who are dying. A lack of agreement on best practice lead to this new report from the Royal College of Physicians.
