December 16th 2009
The greatest risk to a woman of dying from a post-operative blood clot is after hip or knee replacement surgery. 1 in 45 women will have to be admitted to hospital for treatment after such surgery, it is estimated in the BMJ. Only 1 in 815 are likely to be admitted after day case surgery. This risk exists for up to twelve weeks after surgery.
