By registering your living will and do not attempt resuscitation directive on the National Register of Living Wills
- You will always know where there is a copy
- Your family, friends, carer and health care proxy will know where there is a copy
- Your membership card will alert any doctor to the fact you have a living will and / or DNAR
- Your medical team will be able to access a copy and must respect your wishes
Medical teams must honour your living will and / or DNAR if they know that you have one. Medical professionals will use your membership card information to access the clinicians' login. They will only be able to view your end of life care choices. They cannot amend or update any information.
Your documents should only be stored if they have been signed, witnessed and dated. Living wills dated before October 2007 when the Mental Capacity Act came fully into force should not be stored as they may not be considered valid. How does it work sets out the process.
Membership of the National Register is a subscription service. You can access and update your information at any time.
